This report contains a summary of the instrumentation setup present at theUniversity of Rhode Island. Pavement instrumentation is a very powerful tool in the hand of a researcher dealing with prediction of pavement response, since it is very difficult to simulate the field conditions as regards to boundary conditions and traffic flow in the laboratory situations. It is also very difficult to incorporate these conditions in computer models. The existing instrumentation setup was established to monitor strains at the bottom of the bound layer of a flexible pavement structure. A computer program was developed to graphically represent strains in the field as the load traverses the path over the strain gages. The setup was first validated in the laboratory using a steel bar. Tests were carried out for different boundary conditions. Field tests were performed to evaluate for repeatability of the strain gauges. Field testing included loading using a loaded truck as well as a Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD). The results of these tests compared favorably with results obtained from ELSYM5, a computer program used to predict the strains at the bottom of the bound layers.
