A comparison based on a uniform set of data is made between two well-knownmethods in the French and the American school in multicriteria decision analysis: ELECTRE III and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). We consider first the difference between distance and ratio scales in both methods, which gives us the idea of using REMBRANDT, a geometric version of AHP. We will then establish a uniform way to compare both methods by forming a qualitative scale, on which each alternative is given a grade as is done in the Simple Multi-Attribute Rating Technique (SMART). A cross-comparison affirms the equivalence of the two methods. We present three case studies which show that the rankings do not differ significantly.
