In the Spring of 1992, the Division of Medical Expenditures Studies of the Agencyfor Health Care Policy and Research launched a Feasibility Study (FS) to evaluate study design options and data collection methodologies applicable to future studies patterned after the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey (NMES2). NMES2 was designed to provide national estimates of health care use, medical expenditures, and health insurance coverage for persons living in households in the United States. Ancillary data collections were carried out with medical and health insurance providers nominated in household interviews in order to verify and supplement information obtained from family respondents. The areas targeted for examination in the FS were selected in order to improve on the quality and timeliness of data collected both from households and providers in future NMES Surveys.
