摘要

This study presents findings on the health status and needs of AmericanIndians/Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) living in six urban areas not served by an urban Indian health program funded by the Indian Health Service (IHS). Significant findings include: (1) heart disease is the leading cause of death among AI/ANs, while accidents are the third; (2) diabetes is twice as common as in the general U.S. population; (3) urban AI/ANs earn much less than the average household, are two times more likely to lack health insurance; and (4) health and mortality statistics for AI/ANx are often unavailable. The report recommends that (1) local urban AI/AN organizations pursue Title V funding through the Indian Health Care Improvement Act to establish urban Indian health care programs; and (2) health officials at all levels recognize the health needs of urban-dwelling AI/ANs.
