The OTA report discusses the complaints and concerns about the care provided fornursing home residents with dementia that have led to the development of special care units, the theoretical concepts that underlie their design and operation, and the findings of studies that describe and evaluate them. The report analyzes the problems and opportunities created by the proliferation of special care units and discusses the ways in which government has responded or could respond to these problems and opportunities.
