Price reforms are critical for China's future development. It is in recognition of their importance that the Chinese authorities are now contemplating a program of adjustment involving all real sectors of the economy. The paper reviews China's experience of price reform and contrasts it with that of several East European economies. The review underlines the need for price reform to be coordinated with actions that help to maintain macroeconomic stability, impose hard budget constraints on enterprises and provide a safety net for workers.
