摘要

The document is a primer on coastal tourism development in Southeast Asia. After an introductory section listing some 80 existing or potential tourist sites along the region's coasts, the book examines the physical aspects of coasts that must be assessed prior to development. Stages in the development of Southeast Asian tourism and a typology of resorts by quality of accommodation are then identified, with stress on two types that have particular importance for the future: specialized resorts developed for specific market segments; and mega-resorts, such as the one being planned in Phuket. The report examines the conflicts between tourism and other sectors regarding the use of coastal resources, as well as potential negative impacts on the environment, society, and the village-level economy. Existing guidelines, strategies, and controls for sustainable coastal tourism are reviewed in conclusion.
