Outdoor air intake rates are studied todetermine their impacts on moisture controlin buildings, especially in hot, humidclimates. Key impacts of outdoor air intakerates can be readily modeled and studiedusing computer simulations of buildingenergy costs. Increased ventilation ratescreate real capital and operating costs forbuilding owners and operators, withimplications beyond energy costs relating toincreased ventilation requirements. In hot,humid climates, increased ventilation ratesincrease latent loads more than sensibleloads, requiring lower sensible heat ratios.Stock HVAC package units and split systemsare not available with the requisite sensibleheat ratios, and cannot maintain moisturecontrol in small commercial buildingswithout costly modifications.
