Abstract : At the end of 1993, Chile had almost completed the construction of a route through the mountains of the Chilean section of Patagonia, covering a distance of more than 1 000 km. This route could, for the first time, open up a vast area which until now has been characterised mainly by farming ventures based on a form of pastoralism which has proved destructive both for forests and soils. While the Carretera Austral seems to have already been heralded as a factor of prime importance for the promotion of tourism in southern Chile, at the same time it also opens up the region to resource development projects which appear in contradiction to ecotourism. For this type of tourism, the remaining areas of the Patagonian wilderness should be a precious resource.
