Abstract. - Official or clandestine agricultural development has now reached large proportions in the tunisian Sahara, especially to the south of the Chott Jerid, in the Nefzawa, an area once nearly exclusively occupied by nomads. The reasons for this development are to be found in the settling-down of the nomads, the fashion for the deglet nour date, which is exported, the importance of artesian water resources and the various programmes for equipping and reclaiming the area.
