Application of alkaline compounds is an effective method for suppressing cadmium(Cd)uptake from soil by plants. In thisstudy, the effect of application of calcium carbonate(CaCO3)or magnesium carbonate(MgCO3)having pH 6.5 or pH 7.0 to soil onthe growth of- and Cd uptake by seedlings of cabbage(Brassica oleracea L. cv. Kinkei 201; Sakata Seed Co., Japan)was studiedunder pot experiment using Cd enriched soi(l total Cd ; 0.5μg dry soil g -1 or 1.0μg dry soil g -1). No significant difference in the growth of seedlings was observed between CaCO3 and MgCO3 application having pH6.5 ineach Cd concentration of soil. The growth of seedlings grown with MgCO3 application was significantly higher than that withCaCO3 having pH7.0 in 0.5μg dry soil g -1 and having pH6.5 and pH7.0 in 1.0μg dry soil g -1 of Cd. The Cd concentration in the shoots grown in 0.5μg dry soil g -1 Cd was 1.4〜1.9μg dry matter g -1, and that of roots was 6.6〜9.1μg dry matter g -1. No significant difference in the Cd concentration in the seedlings was observed with application ofdifferent alkaline compounds and pH. In 1.0μg dry soil g -1 Cd, the Cd concentration of the shoots was 1.7〜3.9μg dry matterg-1. The Cd concentration of the shoots grown with MgCO3 application was lower than that with CaCO3 under each pH. TheCd concentration in the roots was 6.8~29μg dry matter g -1, and that with MgCO3 application was lower than that with CaCO3. The Ca concentration in the shoots was 8.3~15 mg dry matter g -1. The Ca concentration in the shoots grown in 0.5μg drysoil g -1 Cd with MgCO3 application or CaCO3 having pH7.0 was higher than that with CaCO3 having pH6.5. Ca concentrationin the roots was 0.02~7.5 mg dry matter g -1, and was significantly lower with MgCO3 application than with CaCO3. Mg concentration in the shoots was 21~88 mg dry matter g -1, and was significantly higher with MgCO3 application thanwith CaCO3 having each pH, although no difference in Mg concentration in that with CaCO3 application was observed betweenpH6.5 and pH7.0. Mg concentration in the roots with MgCO3 application was significantly higher than that with CaCO3 undereach Cd enriched soil. Cd content of the shoots with CaCO3 or MgCO3 application having pH 7.0 was lower than that having pH 6.5 in 1.0μg drysoil g -1 Cd. No difference in Cd content in the roots with CaCO3 or MgCO3 application was observed in each Cd enriched soil,respectively. The results obtained in this study suggested that MgCO3 application to Cd enriched soil was more effective for suppressingCd uptake from soil by seedlings of cabbage than CaCO3.
