The earliest record of cage culture practices dates backudto the late 1800 in Southeast Asia, particularly in theudfreshwater lakes and river systems of Kampuchea.udMarine fish farming in cages traces its beginning to theud1950s in Japan where fish farming research at theudFisheries Laboratory of the Kinki University led to theudcommercial culture of yellow tail Seriola quinqueradiataudand developed into a significant industry as early asud1960. Since the 1970, Thailand has developed cageudculture techniques for two important marine finfish: theudsea bream (Pagrus major) and grouper (Epinephelus spp.).udLarge scale cage farming of groupers were establishedudin Malaysia in 1980. Korea started cage culture in theudlate 1970s and by the end of 1980, cage culture of theudolive flounder (Paralichthys olivacens) and black rockfishud(Sebastes schlegeli) was established, and developed intouda successful aquaculture industry in the 1990s. Cageudculture of groupers (Epinephelus spp.) in the Philippinesudhas been practiced since 1980s. Mariculture of milkfishudin the 1990s led to the further growth and developmentudof the industry.
