In order to make clear the effect of the sharpness of the wood cutting tools on cutting forces, tool wear, the roughness of the cutting surface, the cutting mechanism, properties of the chip and so on, a more systematic research under actual cutting conditions should be carried out. For that purpose, it is important and necessary to make clear the sensuous sharpness and the mechanical sharpness of a wood cutting tool. In the present paper, various experimental apparatuses are designed in order to measure the above-mentioned sharpness. Characteristics of the wood-cutting method with various experimental apparatuses are discussed. And using these apparatuses, the measurement and the evaluation of the sharpness are tried under various cutting conditions and various workpiece conditions.
