The invention relates to a method for emergency shutdown of a supply voltage or traction power supply on an electrified line or an electrified line section for rail vehicles, comprising the steps of: transmitting a signal automatically generated on demand from a rail vehicle located on the line or from an external mobile transmitting device to a receiving device, wherein the signal contains information about the desirable switching off of the voltage on the line or a line section, information about the sender and information about the current position of the rail vehicle or the mobile transmitting device; transmitting the signal from the receiving device to an operating unit; switching off the voltage on the line or the line section in the operating unit.
