The movement of a vehicle 100 is controlled by a vehicle control unit (VCU) 10. The VCU receives transmitted signals from remote control device 200 via receiving means 202. The remote control device 200 is used to request a motion of the vehicle. The VCU 10 then provides an output signal for controlling the motion of the vehicle based on the requested motion from the remote control device 200. The vehicle 100 has one or more proximity sensors comprising ultrasound, radar or optical sensors used to detect attachment of a trailer 300. The trailer can also be detected by an electrical connection with the vehicle. When a trailer 300 is detected, the output signal from the VCU 10 is limited. The output signal can correspond to a maximum speed of the vehicle. The maximum speed can be zero which results in no movement of the vehicle when the trailer 300 is connected.
