A glass scoring apparatus 1 comprises a track 3 and a mounting means for securing the track to a pane of glass. Further, a carriage 4 is movably mounted to the track and a scoring means 5 is associated with the carriage. The apparatus is configured such that movement of the carriage along the track, when the track is secured to a pane of glass, causes the scoring means to score the glass, thereby describing at least part of the periphery of an aperture. The apparatus may be used for creating an aperture in the window of a building to provide an emergency escape passageway. Preferably, one of the carriage and track comprises a key and the other a keyway. The scoring means may comprise an adjustable cutting element (51, fig 2). Preferably, the mounting means comprises one or more suction devices (6, fig 3), which may each comprise a valve 62 means to release the suction device from the pane of glass. The apparatus may comprise a template 2 formed of four hinged quarter segments 20, 21, 22, 23, each segment being provided with a handle 7.
