The fitting 410 comprises a pipe socket 414 for receiving the free end of a pipe, and a grab ring 428 comprising teeth 432 extending from an annular body, with a mechanism for moving the grab ring from an active state where the teeth engage a pipe and a passive state where the teeth are disengaged from the pipe. The mechanism may comprise a release member movable in an axial direction between first and second positions. The grab ring may be supported within the housing of a cartridge. The grab ring may be rotatable within the housing. The socket may comprise serrations which inter-engage with protrusions on the cartridge to lock or prevent rotation of the cartridge. The release member may comprise a ramped cam surface which is acted on by a driver 460. The fitting may comprise a body 412 and a cap 416, rotation of the body relative to the cap switching the grab ring from the active to the passive state. A position indicator tab 472 on the cap may indicate when the grab ring is in the active state. Also claimed is a plumbing fitting comprising a cartridge having a grab ring supported within a housing.
