A method of controlling the positioning of a motor vehicle (10) on a road (1) comprising several traffic lanes laterally delimited by marking lines on the ground (16), comprising: receiving a signal from a camera (20) fitted to the vehicle, analyze said signal to detect said marking lines on the ground, identify, according to a predefined classification of types of marking lines on the ground, the type of lines detected delimiting the current traffic lane of the vehicle, determine characteristics of the current traffic lane depending on the type of marking lines delimiting it and, if the current traffic lane is among a leftmost (13) or right-most (11) lane depending on the direction of travel of the vehicle , shift the vehicle towards the distal edge (14,15) of the road with respect to the central axis of the current traffic lane.
