The invention relates to a starting element (1) for a hydrodynamic axial bearing. The thrust element (1) comprises a running surface (5) with a profiling (6) for generating a hydrodynamic load. It is provided that the profiling (6) comprises a segment structure (8), which runs segment-shaped around a center (7), with alternating first segments (9) and second segments (10), of which the first segments (9) are opposite to the second segments (10) are at least partially recessed. It is also provided that at least one of the first segments (9) is assigned a recess (11) with a longitudinal extension in the radial direction with respect to the center (7) and a cross section present transversely to the longitudinal extension, the cross section tapering radially outward. The invention further relates to a hydrodynamic axial bearing with such a starting element (1).
