An early warning procedure for severe weather is planned. An electrical charge of at least one rotor blade (200) of a wind energy installation (100) is recorded. The detected electrostatic charge or a parameter derived from the electrostatic charge is compared with a limit value. A warning signal is issued when the limit value is exceeded. In this way, an early weather warning procedure can be provided without the need for external data. In other words, only those data that can be recorded within the wind turbine are analyzed for the early weather warning method.
