Various embodiments of the invention can be used to find a combination of voltage and frequency that results in a minimal amount of energy consumption in a digital system, including energy consumed by the voltage regulator (VR) of the system. The process may include finding a separate point of minimum energy consumption for each of several different modes of VR, one mode being the Vin to Vout ratio for that VR. The smallest value of these points can then be selected as the total minimum. The process of making this determination can be performed on-site while the device is in operation, and may include changes in operating temperature, load, and process variations.
