The invention relates to a stunning device (16) for automatically stunning slaughter animals (12), comprising: a slaughter pistol device (18), a positioning unit (20) for positioning the slaughter pistol device (18), at least one imaging device (24) for capturing a body part (34) of the slaughter animal (12), said part having an effective position (46) for the slaughter pistol device (18), and - a detection module for detecting the effective position (46) on the basis of the images generated by the imaging device (24) and a control unit (30) for actuating the positioning unit (20) and/or the slaughter pistol device (18) depending on the detected effective position (46). The detection module is designed as an object detection and object tracking module (32) for detecting and tracking said body part (34) and/or tracking the effective position (46) which moves together with the movement of the body part (34) of the slaughter animal (12) via the images of the imaging device (24). The invention additionally relates to a corresponding method for automatically positioning a slaughter pistol device (18) for stunning slaughter animals (12) and to a corresponding computer program product.
