The invention relates to a method for checking the freedom from collisions or the ability to transfer when a workpiece holding device (23) of a transfer unit (12) moves relative to an upper tool (13) or lower tool (14) of a press (10) that can be moved in a stroke direction (H). For this purpose, a relative curve (R) is first determined, which describes the movement of a reference point (X) on the workpiece holding device (23) during a complete lifting movement of the upper tool (13) or the lower tool (14) in a tool coordinate system (WK), which is stationary is arranged on the movable upper tool (13) or movable lower tool (14). The relevant upper tool (13) or lower tool (14) is stationary with respect to this relative curve (R). At least one critical section (K) is defined on the relative curve (R). At least one test position (P) is defined within this critical section. If the reference point (X) is at the test position (P), a transfer space (T) is determined and presented to an operator. The transfer space (T) is the space that the workpiece holding device (23) and optionally at least one part of the transfer unit (12) adjoining the workpiece holding device (23) with or without a workpiece (11) in one or more positions (S1, S2) takes or take. This enables a quick check of the absence of collisions with little computing effort.
