The purpose of the present invention is to provide a diffractive element that functions as a transmission hologram, especially to provide a diffractive element suitable for configuring an image projection system. The present invention provides a composite diffractive element having a laminate structure that includes a first diffractive element, a second diffractive element, and third diffractive element in this order. The second diffractive element diffracts and reflects the light, which passes through the first diffractive element to reach the second diffractive element, toward the first diffractive element. The first diffractive element diffracts and reflects the light diffracted and reflected by the second diffractive element toward the third diffractive element. The third diffractive element allows the light diffracted and reflected by the first diffractive element to pass therethrough and diffracts and reflects zero-th order light that passes through the first diffractive element and the second diffractive element.
