A method for updating mapping data stored in a storage unit on board a vehicle by being consolidated into sets associated with elementary geographical areas. This method comprises a first step (10), in which at least one elementary geographical area is determined in which the vehicle is accustomed to being located, and a second step (20-50), in which a mapping data server is polled in order to determine whether it stores, for this determined elementary geographical area, a more recent set and, if so, the set that is associated with this determined elementary geographical area is downloaded so that it replaces, during a subsequent start-up of the vehicle, the corresponding set stored in the storage unit with a new updating date.
