The invention concerns a parallelepiped container (1), the upper face (6) of which is open and which is equipped with a system (8) for retracting/deploying a tarpaulin (7) over this opening (6). The aim of the invention is that this system be easy to handle, robust, adaptable to various containers and easy to assemble and disassemble. According to the invention, the system (8) comprises hoops (9, 9e, 9s) supporting the tarpaulin (7). Each hoop (9, 9e, 9s) is connected at each of its ends to a carriage (10, 10e, 10s) that can move in translation in a lateral guide rail. At least one of the end hoops (9) is a drive hoop (9e), in the vicinity of which a handling pole (17) can be or is connected for the manual retracting/deploying of the tarpaulin (7). The movable carriages (10e) of the drive hoop (9e) are different from the other movable carriages and the other hoops which are followers. Each movable drive carriage (10e) comprises a frame (14) on which rollers (15) are mounted, which cooperate with one of the guide rails (11). At least one of the removable drive carriages (10e) is equipped with an immobilisation lock, in the deployed position of the tarpaulin on the opening (6) of the container (1). The movable carriages (10) are linked to one another, on each side of the container, by links (16) each comprising two articulated arms (161, 162).
