The extrusion line consists of a customized twin-screw extruder with automatic material push-feeding setup, a water bath unit, a haul-off unit and a wind-up unit. Due to the light long carbon fibres used in the fabrication of composite filaments, the automatic material push-feeding setup installed onto the feed hopper of the extruder eliminates the forming of a net-like structure by long carbon fibres that could block the material flow, and facilitates the homogeneous feeding of the mixture composed of polylactic acid pellets and long carbon fibres. The fabricated polylactic acid composite filaments have a uniform distribution of long carbon fibres with the weight contents ranging from 0-15%. The objects printed by employing these long carbon fibres reinforced composite filaments exhibit a beneficial mechanical and aesthetic properties. This invention has a great potential to fabricate 3D printed products for high-end applications, such as automotive parts, aerospace devices and sports equipment.
