A method for directly bonding a metal to a transparent substrate includes providing (1300) a substrate (120); placing (1302) a metal foil (126) directly on a face of the substrate (120); irradiating (1304) a portion (127) of the metal foil (126) with a laser beam (112) so that metal corresponding to the portion (127) melts and bonds directly to the substrate (120) and forms a metal pad (128); and pumping (1306) a gas (136) above the portion (127) to prevent oxidation of the melted metal.
