A method and system for suppressing subsynchronous oscillation of a thermal power unit. The method comprises: taking a generator rotating speed deviation signal ∆ω as an input signal of a subsynchronous resonance damping controller (SSRDC), ∆ω comprising information of generator unit shafting torsional oscillation mode components; controlling the SSRDC to obtain, according to ∆ω, a trigger angle increment ∆α of a static var compensator (SVC), so as to regulate electromagnetic torque increments ∆Te corresponding to multiple shafting torsional oscillation frequencies output by a generator unit; and controlling the SVC so that ∆Te corresponding to the multiple shafting torsional oscillation frequencies has the same phase as ∆ω (1020), thereby suppressing subsynchronous oscillation of the generator unit. In the case that shafting torsional oscillation of the generator unit is detected by means of a supplementary excitation damping controller (SEDC), performing phase-shifting and amplification on a detected shafting torsional oscillation signal by means of the SEDC, and superimposing the shafting torsional oscillation signal subjected to phase-shifting and amplification on a control signal of an excitation regulator of the generator unit, thereby suppressing subsynchronous oscillation of the generator unit.
