An ex vivo or in vitro procedure for producing activated T cells comprising: contacting the provided immature dendritic cells with an amount of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) consisting of between 105 and 107 cfu per ml of tissue culture medium and between 100 and 1000 units of interferon gamma (IFNγ) per ml of tissue culture medium and a predetermined antigen under culture conditions suitable for the maturation of immature dendritic cells, in order to form mature dendritic cells or a population of mature dendritic cells ; where the mature dendritic cell population produces at least 10 times more interleukin 12 than interleukin 10 than a similar dendritic cell population grown in the presence of BCG without IFNγ, and contacting the mature dendritic cells with naïve T cells to form activated T cells that produce IFNγ, and where activated T cells produce a type 1 immune response.
