method and apparatus for measuring formation anisotropy during drilling. a beading system to measure the anisotropic properties of materials penetrated by a drill hole. a downhole or element of the "profiling tool" of the system comprises a source section comprising an unipole ediopole acoustic source. the receiving section comprises a plurality of receiving stations arranged in different axial spacings from the acoustic source. each receiving station comprises one or more sound receivers. the system requires the receiving source and section to rotate synchronously as the profiling tool is transported along the drill hole. the receiving responses are measured in a plurality of azimuth angle segments and processed as a function of the angle of rotation of the tool, the profiling system can be configured as an lwd system, an mwd system, and a wired system that now synchronized the receiving source and section. all configurations require the acoustic source to operate at a relatively high frequency.
