the present invention relates to systems and methods for treating a stream (12) from an advanced oil recovery process by chemical injection (ceor). the method includes the step of contacting the feed stream (12) with a plurality of particles of composite media (20) in order to remove hydrocarbons from the feed stream (12); and generating a treated stream (40) comprising a reduced amount of hydrocarbons and at least a major part of the improved viscosity polymer remaining therein with respect to the feed stream (12). the feed stream (12) includes hydrocarbons, a concentration of a polymer of improved viscosity of about at least 10 mg / l, and an aqueous fluid. the composite media particles (20) each comprise a mixture of a cellulose-based material and a polymer.
