The optical system (100) comprises a polarizing source; a reflective display device (70); at least one lightwave collimating component (16); and a lightwave exit surface (20), and an image having an associated outer surface. Includes a collimating prism (102). The polarization-selective beam splitter arrangement (10) is arranged in the prism (102) on a plane inclined with respect to the light-wave entrance plane (8). The reflective display device is illuminated by the light reflected from the beam splitter arrangement (10) and produces a polarization rotation corresponding to the bright parts of the image. Images from the reflective display device (70) are selectively transmitted by the polarization selective beam splitter arrangement (10), collimated by the collimating component (16), and reflected from the polarization selective beam splitter arrangement (10). And projected through the exit surface (20). In some implementations, additional polarizers located at or near the exit surface help optimize the extinction of unwanted illumination light.
