A small modular nuclear reactor plant is provided that can include a core that includes a primary sodium containing cold primary sodium stream and a heated primary sodium stream. The heated primary sodium stream can enter one or more IHXs where the heated primary sodium exchanges heat with secondary sodium flowing in at least one intermediate sodium loop. The intermediate sodium loop can include a secondary sodium stream that can send heat to the energy conversion section via a heat exchanger. The energy conversion portion can include a bypass valve. The bypass valve may bypass energy conversion working fluid (such as S-CO2) out of the turbine during the conditioning period discussed herein. The plant may include passive load following features along with the ability to provide co-heat. [Selection diagram] Figure 1A
