The present invention relates to a cold crystallization material having a high latent heat and a method of using the cold crystallization material for heat storage. The cold crystallization material of the present invention comprises a phase change material and an additive, which is preferably a hydrophilic polymer matrix. Preferably, sugar alcohols such as erythritol or D-mannitol are used as the phase change material. The polymers of the present invention are preferably crosslinked and ionic, ie polyelectrolytes. PCM stores a large amount of heat energy during melting and releases the stored heat energy by cold crystallization. Compared to the previously studied cold crystallizers, the latent heat of the cold crystallizers of the present invention is much higher and the cold crystallization is more reproducible in successive melt-crystallization cycles. The cold crystallization material can be used for heat storage. Thermal energy can be released from the cold crystallizer by heat pulses on demand.
