The disclosed embodiments relate to the step of generating an update package for updating software on an electronic control unit (ECU) in a vehicle. The operation includes a step of accessing a plurality of attributes of the software update to be stored on the ECU in the vehicle and a step of accessing a plurality of corresponding attributes of the current software stored on the ECU in the vehicle. A step of comparing the attribute of the above and a plurality of corresponding attributes, a step of generating a delta file representing a difference between the plurality of attributes determined in the comparison and the plurality of corresponding attributes, and providing the ECU with the delta file. The delta file may include a step that is configured to be processed by a startup code in the ECU that enables the delta file to run in the ECU in the vehicle.
