An infusion system for performing a split bolus infusion procedure is described. The injection system comprises a processor and a non-transitory storage medium storing programming instructions, the programming instructions being executed by the processor such that the injection system controls the injection of contrast agent by the injection system. Allows it to operate as a parameter generation system used to determine parameters associated with a bolus injection protocol. The split bolus infusion protocol includes at least a loading infusion and a diagnostic infusion, the loading infusion being performed prior to the diagnostic infusion, and the pause separating the loading infusion from the diagnostic infusion. Further described is a method for imaging a patient using a split bolus injection technique, and a system having an imaging device and the injection system described above.
