Lubricating oil base oil is provided. Lubricating oil base oils have cold properties determined using stepwise regression of carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy peak values. Also provided is a method of selecting a candidate lubricant base oil or a mixture thereof having acceptable cold performance.
