A range extended plug-in hybrid electric vehicle 5 is provided. The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle 5 comprises: a high voltage electric generator 22 driven by a reciprocating piston engine 10 via a coupling 11 that includes a flywheel (11F in Figure 3) fastened to a crankshaft (10C in Figure 3) of the reciprocating piston engine 10; a resilient rotary drive (11S in Figure 3) and a drive plate (11D in Figure 3) driveably connected to an input shaft (22S in Figure 3) of the high voltage electric generator 22. An electronic controller 31 is used to model variations in output torque (T in Figure 4) from the reciprocating piston engine 10 and control the driving torque (G in Figure 4) required for the high voltage electric generator 22 based upon the modelled torque variations.
