The disclosure relates to the generation of a compressive residual stress with shot peening elements in an inner opening (204) of an additively manufactured component (102). The method according to the disclosure includes receiving a component (102) fabricated by a metal-powder-based additive manufacturing process, wherein the component (102) includes a body (200) having an outer surface (202) and an inner opening (204) passing at least partially through the body (200), the inner opening (204) including an additively manufactured shot peening element detached from a surface (210) of the inner opening (210), the additively manufactured shot peening element being configured to contact inducing the residual compressive residual stress with the surface (210) of the inner opening (204); and vibrating the component (102) at a selected frequency, wherein the additively manufactured shot peening element induces the compressive residual stress against the surface (210) of the inner opening (204) during vibration.
