One purpose of the invention is to improve the durability of a hinge portion that flexibly couples a plurality of pieces forming a linear extension and retraction mechanism. A linear extension and retraction mechanism includes: a plurality of first pieces 53, such as a plate are formed and are connected by first hinge portions 300 bendable with each other; and a plurality of second pieces 54 that are C-shaped in cross-section or have a hollow square shape and are bendably connected to each other at a bottom surface side by second hinge portions 400. When the first pieces are connected to the second pieces on a bottom surface side opposite to the front surface side, the first pieces and the second pieces are formed into a columnar body which is stiffened by being restricted to bend, and the first pieces and the second pieces return to a bent state when separated. Each of the first hinge portions is formed of a columnar shaft 60 and bearing portions 533, 532-1, 532-2 for the shaft, and the bearing portions are provided at front and rear ends of each of the first pieces. A non-circular flange 61 is provided at a rear end of the shaft. A receiving portion 535 formed as a recess and configured to receive a shape of the flange is provided in the storage portion at the front or rear end of the first piece.
