The driver assistance system is set up, starting from a state without the automated transverse guide by means of the hands - on - detection device to determine that the driver, the first of all the steering wheel has contacted with both hands, a hand from the steering wheel - if any other hand has taken on the steering wheel -. In response thereto the automated transverse guide is then activated.
