Method for determining an accident cause of a vehicle (1) and for reporting the cause of the accident of the vehicle (1), the vehicle (1) having an accident data storage system (2), a sensor system (3) which is connected to the accident data storage system (2) wherein the accident data storage system (2) comprises a storage device, a communication device connected to a central device (4), an evaluation unit, a housing and a power supply device, characterized in that the sensor system (3) of the vehicle (1) recognizes another vehicle (5) in a predetermined radius (6) around the vehicle (1), the sensor system (3) of the vehicle (1) determines, from the detection of the other vehicle (5), environmental data, environmental data, driving state data, driver intervention data and forwards them to the accident data storage system (2), the accident data storage system (2) evaluates this data and stores it in its storage device for a predetermined period of time, the accident data storage system (2) detects an accident of the vehicle (1) on the basis of the evaluated data, - an accident cause is determined from the evaluated data, - The cause of the accident, as soon as the accident is detected, is forwarded by the communication device to the central device (4) and stored in a long-term memory of the accident data storage system (2), wherein - In an area in which only local transmission of data is possible, the cause of the accident by means of the communication device to the at least one other vehicle (5) having an accident data storage system (2), in a transmission range of the vehicle (1) is forwarded, this at least one other vehicle (5) forwards the cause of the accident to the central facility (4) as soon as the at least one other vehicle (5) is located outside the area in which only local transmission of data is possible.
