The present invention relates to a driving assistance system and a method for automatically putting a vehicle into a rest area on a highway, wherein the driving assistance system comprises: a navigation system for transmitting a current position of a vehicle, current driving road information, and rest area information; a vehicle dynamic sensor for sensing and transmitting a driving speed of the vehicle; a vehicle omnidirectional detection camera for transmitting an image of an external object around the vehicle, a lane, or a sign; a vehicle surrounding detection sensor for transmitting a distance with the external object around the vehicle or a relative speed; and an electronic control device controlling the vehicle to be automatically put into an entrance of a rest area that is the nearest on a highway on which the vehicle is being driven.
