A base station for a MIMO wireless system implementing an efficient channel estimation technique. One exemplary embodiment includes: an array of multiple antennas exchanging uplink and downlink signals with a spatially distributed user terminal; A plurality of transmit chains each connected to one of the multiple antennas by respective transceivers connecting the antenna to a corresponding one of the plurality of receive chains; And a controller. Each of the receive chains opportunistically derives an estimated uplink channel response coefficient from the packet header of the uplink signal and the controller determines the steering transformation based at least in part on the estimated channel response coefficient. The transmit chain applies a steering transformation to the spatially separated downlink signals to generate antenna-specific downlink signals for each antenna in the array. Another exemplary embodiment determines a mobility indicator for each user terminal based at least in part on an estimated channel response coefficient and schedules at least one operation based on the mobility indicator.
