In the installed prior art reactors, dense aggregates of microorganisms are typically formed or embedded in the extracellular matrix. The dense agglomerates include extracellular polymeric materials, or biopolymers, especially linear polysaccharides. The present invention relates to a fibrous biopolymer obtained by the above process, particularly alginate or bacterial alginate, and the use of the biopolymer in the field of biopolymer extraction from granular sludge.
