The present invention relates to optical structures and methods for controlling optical properties and structural stability of optical structures using ion species. The optical structure is less crystalline when an increasing concentration of ion species is used. In certain embodiments, the ionic species is a transition metal salt. The method enables the production of monocrystalline, polycrystalline or vitreous optical structures. The method enables control of the optical properties and structural stability of the optical structure. The resulting optical structures are useful for a wide range of applications including sensors, photoactive catalysts, emitters, and random lasing.
