An objective of the present invention is to reduce the significance of differences in skills and experience of fault tree builders in relation to fault tree building, improve fault diagnostic precision, and improve reliability in machines in operation. Provided is a device for diagnosing a fault in a machine in operation, said device characterized by comprising: a malfunction degree analysis part for computing the malfunction degree of each component which configures a machine, said computation being derived from a comparison of I/O data of the machine with a threshold; an automatic fault tree generation part for retaining, for each of the components, a fault tree of the component in which a fault of the component is associated with a fault of a sensor within the component, joining the fault trees of the components on the basis of correspondences of I/O data among the components, and generating a fault tree of the machine as a whole; a fault analysis part for analyzing a fault of the machine from the malfunction degree and information of the fault tree of the machine as a whole; and a display part for displaying and issuing an alert of the information about the analysis by the fault analysis part.
