A radial thermal drift error modeling and compensation method for a main spindle (1) of a horizontal CNC lathe. The method comprises: testing thermal drift errors of two points in a radial direction of the main spindle (1) of the CNC lathe, and corresponding temperatures at key points; acquiring a thermal tilting angle of the main spindle on the basis of a thermal tilt deformation mechanism of the main spindle (1), and analyzing a correlation between the thermal tilting angle and a temperature difference between a left side and a right side of a headstock (2); classifying a thermal deformation condition of the main spindle (1) according to whether the value of the thermal drift error of the two points undergoing testing is positive or negative, and expansion or contraction on the left and right sides of the headstock (2), and constructing a thermal drift error model for each thermal deformation orientation; and analyzing an effect of a structural dimension of the lathe on a model prediction result. During real-time compensation, a thermal deformation orientation of the main spindle (1) is automatically determined according to the temperatures at the key points, and a corresponding thermal drift error model is automatically selected to perform compensation on the main spindle (1). The method determines a thermal deformation orientation of a main spindle (1) of a CNC lathe during machining operations, and achieves prediction of a radial thermal drift error of the main spindle (1) according to a thermal deformation mechanism.
