An archive storage system (1) for isolating the archived material from an external environment comprises a first shelving (2) slidable along a sliding direction (L) and having a seat (102...902) extending along a first perimeter; a seal (101...901) at least partially arranged within the seat (102...902); a second shelving (3) slidable along the sliding direction (L) and provided with a pressing edge (103...903) extending along a second perimeter facing the first perimeter. The archive storage system (1) can be moved between an open configuration and a compact configuration, wherein the pressing edge (103...903) is adapted to generate a pressure on the seal (101...901) so as to deform the seal to define isolating portions (104...904) which extend respectively towards an internal interface between the shelvings and towards the external environment in order to isolate the internal volume with respect to the external environment. A further object of the present patent application is a method for isolating an archiving volume of said archive storage system (1).
